I've been training for at least 6 month in a very dedicated manner. So what was the problem?

I was eating low fat foods, sugar free stuff and the likes. I should be getting my results right? Wrong! Why?

It was not until later did I realize what I was doing wrong. There was nothing wrong with my workout regime other than it was probably crazy but not detrimental to one's health. Workout aside, it was the food intake that was keeping me from reaching my goals.

Fat Free/Low Fat Foods

Why are they bad for you? First of all it's important to note that most foods that are fat free or have no fat are always supplemented with more sugar. Why? Well basically because lots of foods just don't taste good without the fat. Not only does it not taste good other wise but your body just won't be satisfied with the food.

What happens to sugar? Sugar if not used as energy will then be stored in your body as fat. The very thing you wanted to avoid in the first place. There you are trying to avoid fat at all cost, eating this supposedly low fat and no fat food and there your body stores all that extra sugar as fat.

Sugar naturally makes your body more satisfied as it's a form of carbohydrates, the simple kind. Carbohydrates make your body release endorphins, a feel good hormone that makes you feel satisfied so you don't crave for more food. However its just temporary if you are eating mainly simple carbs like sugar.

Sugar Free Foods

Have you ever noticed that almost all those people eating sugar free food are actually overweight? Well you may argue that that is the reason why they are eating sugar free food in the first place. The thing is studies have shown that sugar free food actually makes you gain weight contrary to what the diet food companies are telling you.

Why is that? Here is the science behind it. Aspartame, saccharin and sucralose are one of the most common artificial sweeteners out there. As mentioned before, sugar makes you feel more satisfied due to the endorphin hormone that it will help produce. However, this is not so with sugar free foods and in turn people tend to eat up to 50% more of the food as they aren't satisfied.

Not only are they not satisfying to the body but can also bring serious side-effects such as brain tumors, lesions, seizures, headaches, dizziness, mood disorders, disorientation and confusion, depression and anxiety, diarrhea, fatigue and even heart-attacks. Would you sacrifice your health like this for something that doesn't even work?

So where does that leave us?

Stick to natural foods, the less unprocessed or engineered, the better. If you have a sweet tooth, try the natural sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup. You'll realize that there are much more easier ways to lose fat and also in a much more satisfying way. Stop all those diet foods you're eating right now and follow a proper diet program. You'll be surprised how easy it is to follow a diet especially since it does not starve you.

Being on a low carbohydrate diet does not mean that you take out all the carbohydrate sources in your meals. Depending on your diet plan, these carbohydrate sources may be incorporated in your meals, and are best taken as raw:

o Barley

o Brown rice
o Corn
o Buckwheat
o Maize
o Oatmeal
o Lentils
o Peas
o Wheat germ
o Yams

Being on a diet doesn't necessarily mean that you can't eat the food that you want. Many of the aforementioned foods are actually palatable while still remaining healthy. Before adding any of these low carbohydrate foods to your meals, be sure to check with your diet program first.

So when I looked at the list of banned foods on my Candida diet I got in a bit of a flap. My apprehension didn't ease when I saw examples of Candida diet recipes as I could see my time and money being whittled away on fancy ingredients and difficult cooking methods.

(I'm also not much of a cook so it would be fair to say that I was a bit worried about how they would taste if I got it wrong!)



Simple Sugar Free Candida Diet Recipes

Suddenly my usual method of throwing together a large lasagna or putting on a big roast complete with huge amounts of starchy vegetables was thrown out the window.

I actually found that hunting down Candida diet recipes was really easy, but finding ones that were easy enough to hold my attention and that were relevant to stage one - you know - the stage where pretty much everything is banned - was really difficult.

The best that most Candida diet recipes could do were elaborate pumpkin soups, leek and broccoli casserole or celery and cottage cheese snacks.

So I had a look at what we were allowed and put together a really simple eating plan - make it plain, but vary the flavor with each serving. Once you get to know your flavors it is amazing how much taste variety you can have and sugar, what sugar?

Candida Diet Recipes for Breakfast

Either scrambled eggs (made with water instead of milk) to vary the taste try adding chopped parsley or peppers to the mix. Or, Rolled oat porridge made with water and topped with natural yogurt and cinnamon. If you want to be a bit daring, add some grated apple and/or berries to the mix.

Candida Diet Recipes for Lunch/Dinner

These Candida diet recipes are interchangeable; make a big batch of both and keep them in the fridge. What you don't have for lunch have for dinner and visa verse.

Salad

One of the easiest and quickest Candida diet recipes.

Just tear up a lettuce, slice up an avocado, cut up a couple of peppers and a cucumber and throw them all together. Each time you serve them up vary the flavor by adding a different meat to the mix and seasoning accordingly. For example; when I have a chicken salad, I like to top the salad with cottage cheese and drizzle lemon juice over the lot. For tuna I usually just use lemon juice and for lamb I do a yogurt dressing.

Stir Fry

Stir fry your broccoli, cauliflower, onion and celery as normal, throw in some crushed garlic and ginger and add one or two types of shredded leafy greens - like spinach, bok choy, silver beet or cabbage. As with the salad, change seasonings depending on the meat that you add, or have it without meat - yum!

Candida Diet Recipes for Dessert

Desserts are super hard during stage one - so if you absolutely must have dessert, but don't want to go to a lot of effort and expense, you are really limited to;

Natural unsweetened yogurt with;

cinnamon or allspice; berries; uncooked rolled oats or other soft whole grains.

A super simple dessert idea is to

Place a handful of rolled oats, a handful of amaranth, a couple of pinches of cinnamon and a couple of pinches of allspice into a bag and shake until blended. Sprinkle this over your yogurt and berries. For an extra special sneaky treat you can also add a couple of finger-fulls of dried berries.

Candida Diet Recipes for Snacks

Grab a large rice wafer and top with your choice of;

Cottage cheese and cinnamon or chives Tuna Hummus

(If you can find or make bread that meets all the rules for stage one, then these toppings are also absolutely divine on toast!)

Other snack ideas;

Use hummus, cottage cheese and yogurt as dips for small rice crackers and raw vegetables. Keep boiled eggs in the fridge and grab one when hunger hits. A handful of nuts and seeds mixed together will do wonders for any nagging hunger pangs or munchies.

So once you have your carb food list, you can plan different meals for each day. Just because you are on a diet doesn't mean you cannot still eat foods that are tasty and filling. Low carb doesn't have to mean low food.

Textured vegetable protein (TVP) is not mentioned in the book however, it is a high protein food with some but low carbohydrate. Quorn, a mycoprotein, like TVP is not mentioned in the book. However it is also a high protein food that is low in carbohydrate. This vegetarian food is now available in many different forms and varieties. Some have higher carbohydrate contents than others, so vegetarians will need to shop carefully.

Skimmed milk, low fat cottage cheese, fromage frais, and quark are all mentioned and permitted on the diet. Unlike vegans, vegetarians allow themselves these products as well as eggs (also permitted on the diet). These foods can be used liberally although with some restriction on egg yolks and milk.

If you are diabetic, you really want to stay away from all concentrated sugars until you get better (and yes, type II diabetes can actually go away if you do the right things health wise, like getting enough sleep, reducing stress, exercising, eating right and getting enough vitamins and minerals). If you are not diabetic, small amounts of natural sweetenters like evaporated cane juice (found in Rapadura and Succanat), maple syrup and raw honey from bees NOT fed corn syrup are far better for you to include in your diet than artificial sweeteners, in my opinion. If you have a hard time staying away from sugar, you may need to make a bigger diet change. Many people find that when they start eating real foods, make up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies with those foods and sometimes with whole-food supplements, and make sure they get enough natural proteins and fats, including virgin coconut oil, in their diets, that their sugar cravings gradually disappear.

Following is a short grocery list of low carbohydrate foods

Seafood, Meat and Poultry: Meats are naturally lower in their carbohydrate content unless they are full of additives. It is good to avoid the consumption of excessive fats; so it is better to look for low fat beef, turkey, pork, duck, chicken, fish, sardines, lobster, shrimp, scallops and crab. One must stay away from processed and canned foods, stuffed meats, sausages and deli meats. If you want to buy steak, you must choose the leanest cut to avoid loading your diet with fats.

Green Vegetables: Buy loads of leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, bok choy, lettuce, cabbage, watercress and dandelion. Buy fresh vegetables as much as possible. Though most frozen vegetables carry the nutrients but it is better to avoid the ones with sauces. The sauces mostly are high in carbohydrate and sugar content.

Other Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, celery, cauliflower, cucumbers, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, kelp and eggplant are jam-packed with nutrients and are low in carbohydrates. Potatoes and carrots are loaded with carbohydrates so they must be avoided.

Herbs, Sprouts and Mushrooms: Add clover, alfalfa, garlic, onion, thyme, oregano, basil and different types of mushroom in your grocery list. These herbs are best for controlling the spikes in blood sugar level of diabetics.

Seeds and Nuts: Several nuts are low in their carbohydrate content. Walnuts, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, cashew, pine nuts and pumpkin seeds are healthier for diabetics.

Fruits: The lowest carbohydrate containing fruits are blueberries, apples, cherries, strawberries, apples, oranges, pineapple, grapes, avocado and peaches. Lemon and other citrus fruits are also good.

Other Low Carbohydrate Items: All kinds of eggs (goose, chicken and duck) are high in proteins and low in carbohydrates. It is safe to consume cottage cheese, sour cream, flaxseed oil, olive oil and canola oil,. Sugar free yogurt, low sugar salad and peanut butter are also low in carbohydrates and good for diabetics.
